I don’t think I mention how I hate what WordPress became often enough. Here’s another chance, as I just lost an entire post I spent most of the afternoon writing, despite saving my draft multiple times. 1000 words, multiple pictures… and not a trace of it anywhere. I hit the “publish” button and my draft changed into an empty post. Terrible user experience, I’ll try to recover it somehow, but if I don’t succeed, it will likely be another week without a post on Re-E, as I have quite a hard week ahead of me.
Usually I write my texts in Write and just copy the results here, but this time there were so many pictures, as I wrote several mini-reviews of graphic novels… and gone. Has something like this ever happened to anyone here?
I hate WordPress
there, there. 😦

Thanks, man, I’m a bit less angry now, but it will take some time to fully recover 😉

Oh man, that really sucks. but that is why I always write in openoffice. It doesn’t make me feel any better that even the draft function didn’t save like it was supposed to though.
I fully endorse your hatred right now though. Hate on man, hate on…

I mostly also write somewhere else, but I had so many pictures this time, I thought it will be easier to do it all in WP… my mistake ;(

Oh no. It’s never happened to me although i was having weird commenting problems not long ago. But I’m on self-hosted not WordPress.com, maybe it’s different. The good things on the internet usually always turn bad after a while, don’t they?

Yeah, I can say from experience that wordpress.com and wordpress.org don’t get along real well for comments. Some people have had good luck with that, but most I see, well, it never ends well.

So they do 😦 I’ll never again write directly in WP… what makes me really angry is that I did save the draft repeatedly, that’s really not fair!

It never happened to me, but recently I did lost a big part of a draft as the classic block doesn’t support the read more tag anymore, and everything below it was wiped out when I tried to publish (or was it save?). I know have to use 1 classic block, the read more block and then another classic block.
Sucks indeed

I did use the “read more” block… and lost everything both below and above that… heh, just have to remember to always write my drafts outside of WP

Never happened to me, but I’m sorry it happened to you. I hope you’ll still write the reviews again because graphic novels have become really interesting to me this year.

Thanks. I was quite happy with the post, but don’t have the energy to reconstruct it all… in short, I agreed with you on Moorcock and reviewed Blondel’s comic book adaptation, Monstress and some more niche European stuff :-)

Aww crap. I would have loved to read it. Monstress I have electronically but I haven’t read it yet. And niche European stuff is my thing.

Well, that’s truly both weird and frustrating for you, Piotrek, I can see why you’re fuming. I do everything in block editor now, hated changing but have now got used to it and the select advantages it has over the classic format (such as shifting round paragraphs and images).
That said, I almost exclusively use the WP app for Android and, bar one or three glitches due to human error and slipped thumbs, I’ve never had real problems. And ‘Read more’ always works!

Yes, what happened sure feels strange…but I definitely saved the draft, so some error occured. When I tried to see the preview, just before posting, it was also empty, so perhaps that was my warning. Well, now I’m wiser and I’ll take precautions from now on.

That sucks, mate. Sorry to hear that. It happened to me once quite a while ago. The “user experience” has certainly deteriorated lately.

Mr. Murphy was indeed focusing on you this time… I’m so sorry for your lost post!

I’ve never heard of that happening, how odd. I’m sorry, there’s nothing more frustrating than losing hard work because of technology.

Thanks, it was frustrating. And I decided to share my experience, to find out if that happens often, but also I needed to publish anything, as it’s been a month since the last one;)

Totally understand. That’s why I draft everything in Word first and just indicate where I’ll add photos. Then I just copy/paste it all over.

I will never again deviate from this smart method 🙂

I have a question unrelated to this post, but recently a Dutch publisher published a translation of a book by Barbara Skarga, an autobiographical work about her experiences in the Gulag in between 44 and 56 (“Po wyzwoleniu… 1944-1956”) that she wrote in the early 1980ies. She was unknown to me, but apparently an important figure in Poland, so hence my question: have you or Ola read that book? Would you recommend it?
I’m still reading Kolyma Tales by Varlam Shalamov, and thought this might be a good companion volume, as it is written by a woman (and the Gulag was a different experience for them) and a foreigner.

I think I only read one of her books, a biography of Ernest Renan, and a few shorter pieces. I read about her life when she died though, and this book was highly recommended, I just felt like I read enough on the topic. If it’s available, it should be worth reading, hers was a brilliant mind and seeing GULAG through her eyes would be interesting – and female eyes, I don’t think I read a woman’s testimony.

Thanks, I think I’m going to order it.

Ive had this happen to me a few ties and somehow hitting the undo button once has helped me with a few posts. but it sucks as som times it means i have a lot of paragraphs to rewite. For me its been ever since block fucitor was introduced.

Yes, you can always write the text somewhere else, but it’s also a lot of work with the images… the block editor was the biggest disaster in WP’s history, definitely. Still, even Bookstooge decided there’s no good alternative and went .blog recently…

I do not know if i can start new some place else, all these accounts and stuff and having to learn a new program just sounds like work. My hobby should not feel like a chore

I’ve never encountered this and I hope I never do. Sorry for the waste of time you went through, Pio.
